Trade and trade policy in south africa recent trends and future prospects 1 introduction since 1994 south africa has been rapidly reintegrated into the global economy with the contribution of imports and exports rising strongly as a percentage of gdp the economy has become more open more productive and more outward orientated. The close and complementary relationship between trade and competition policies is founded on the similarity of their objectives both trade and competition policy aim to enhance welfare through the provision of a more efficient allocation of resources whether it be by lowering governmental barriers to trade or through promoting competition.
